Resignation time

Tonight, I'm going to hand in my notice. I have just been waiting to receive my salary, but the ambassador's been away for the past couple of days, so he hasn't been able to pay me yet. Once I've been paid, I will tell him I simply can't deal with curfews and having to work weekends; it'll strip me of my freedom, and freedom is hugely important to me. I will have to leave my evening classes early, I'll be constantly clock-watching when I'm out with friends, and it will be bye bye to my Friday...

Demons and curfews

It's been a while since I last wrote, but that is by no means because things have been peaceful and calm here. Oh no. On Friday afternoon, I was sitting with Malaika in the living room, listening to her usual nonsense and awkwardly smiling at the camera while she took pictures of my nose (she's decided she wants a nose job). At roughly 5.30, Shad walked in and demanded that we left, claiming his favourite TV program was about to start. Malaika protested, as he wasn't supposed to be watching T...

No sex

I've finally managed to get away from Malaika, who was talking to (or rather at) me about Adam, the new hot topic in this household. Shamir was telling me yesterday that he will probably get fired, as he's said so many dodgy things to and about the staff, and clearly doesn't like his employers much either. When he first met Shamir, he said to him "Your boss is old, your madam is young. But your boss doesn't like this [makes sex gestures with fingers] does he?" Poor Shamir was a bit shocked an...

Ambassador shmassador

There isn't much to report from this unusually calm house today. We're still waiting to hear the results of Anush' assessment, but the school didn't ask her to return today, so I taught her for three hours in the morning instead. She does make me laugh, coming out with things like "If I didn't have boobs or a tummy button or private parts, would I be a teddy bear?" Every time I say "I don't know the answer to that, I'm afraid" she responds "Why are you afraid? Is it because the answer's scary...

All Adam's fault

Yesterday morning and evening were both rather uneventful (thank goodness!) but a very surreal moment occurred in the afternoon - I had just returned from the school with Anush and was preparing a snack in the kitchen, where Malaika and Shamir were talking about Adam. Malaika was furious that the driver she thought she knew and trusted was betraying her by badmouthing her to the staff, the manager at the gym, the lady in the butchers, etc. Meanwhile, he was speaking ill of all these people to...

A new week begins

A new week hopefully means a new start, which will entail Anush passing her assessment, and Shamir and Angela being given their passports back, ideally. I wasn't around much over the weekend, but I did return to the house each evening to spend time with Angela and Shamir, who would debrief me and, as usual, vent about Malaika and the ambassador. Apparently both are now rather afraid of what might happen, as the media are involved as well, and several photos of Shamir have been taken. The amb...

Things get more dramatic

Last night, it all kicked off here. I was taking care of Anush in the evening, when I heard Malaika screaming at Angela and Angela doing her best to defend herself. It went on for what seemed like forever and Anush asked me: "Why is mummy so angry?" I had to pretend she'd seen a giant spider. As I was leaving the house that evening, I bumped into Angela on the stairs, who told me she'd been accused of being disloyal. The reason? Malaika thought she saw Shamir sniggering when I passed on Mis...

Take me away...

Yesterday evening, I escaped the house as I always do, and usually return feeling a bit more relaxed. Last night, however, that was not the case; I stepped in through the door and went straight to the kitchen to see what leftovers I could polish off (I have only ever once had dinner with the family). Angela and Shad were both there and as soon as Shad saw me, he did the usual thing of covering his ears and closing his eyes. I'm usually able to ignore him, but on this occasion it triggered som...

Hump Day

Today I'm exhausted- last night I went out for dinner and ended up getting back around 1am, then had to wake up at 7.30 this morning. I felt awful, as Shamir had to stay up to let me in (I haven't been given my own set of keys yet), though he insisted he would have been up anyway, as he likes to keep Angela company when she's doing the ironing (at 1am?!?) When I went to pick up Anush yesterday, Miss. L informed me that she'd wrapped her hands around a little boy's throat, which shocked me as...

The morning of the assessment

I woke up this morning and came downstairs to find Malaika force-feeding bits of squished up French toast to Anush, yelling at her to hurry up, while the poor child was practically choking. She yelled at me too: "Put more milk on that cereal! You'll need your energy today". Meanwhile, I can see Shamir on the other side of the kitchen door making gestures with his rolling pin, pretending to whack her over the head. I try not to laugh. At the school, I speak to the teacher, Miss. L, about Anu...

The story so far

I’m approaching the end of week two of my new job as a live-in nanny/teacher for the children of a diplomat. I won’t name names, or mention which city we’re based in, but I will use this blog as a way to inform the world what goes on behind the scenes in a diplomat’s life and demonstrate how the behaviour of a male in this position of power affects his family members and staff. (Admittedly, it’s also helpful for me to vent a little too!) So far, I’ve had to deal with the following: being at ...
